Frequently Asked Questions
about
Old Paths Christian Kindergarten

1. Describe the Abeka curriculum you use.

The Abeka curriculum has been a leader in Christian education (home schools and private Christian schools) since the 1970's. It is published in Pensacola, Florida. It guides teachers in traditional methods of teaching Bible, reading, mathematics, history, geography, and science, from a Christian perspective. Please check out the Abeka website for the complete scope and sequence which Old Paths Christian Kindergarten will be following.
2. If I enroll in your school, what happens after kindergarten?

It is our goal to grow Old Paths Christian Elementary School (grades K-6) organically. Once we have enrolled students in kindergarten, the next year we will offer first grade and kindergarten, teaching combined classes, or moving to a larger facility and hiring another teacher if enrollment is large enough. The next year we will add second grade, and so on. The goal is to provide a strong foundation by not trying to do everything all at once and sacrificing quality for quantity.

By the end of sixth grade, students at Old Paths Christian Elementary School should be self-disciplined enough, and able to read and write independently enough, so that they can study mostly on their own to give themselves a good junior high and high school education. Sixth-grade graduates of Old Paths Christian Elementary School will be able to transfer seamlessly to the Abeka Correspondence School (a home school program), Wisconsin Virtual School, or even public school. They will be much better equipped to handle academic courses, resist peer pressure, and keep their faith in God than if they had entered the public school as a highly impressionable four-year-old. Although we do not plan as yet to offer a junior high or high school program, that is not out of the question, should we need to make that decision in the future, and will remain a matter for prayer.

3. What about social contact in a small school?

The main purpose of Christian education is to provide children with a solid foundation in Christianity while they are learning basic academics. This is an attempt to prevent peer pressure and other corrupting influences from harming a child's faith while it is still in formation. Social contact will take care of itself. God will provide children with the friends they need and should have, no matter where they go to school.

4. What about sports in a small school?

We are not opposed to sports but do not consider them a priority. Establishing a strong faith in God and learning to read fluently is more important than strengthening the body, because the soul is eternal while the body is not. Private school students and home-schooled students may participate in public school sports because their parents pay taxes. At this point in time our Christian school does not have a Christian sports program, but that may remain a matter for prayer and expansion in the future.
5. What about all the special services my child may receive in the public school?

A strong foundation in Christian faith and principles, coupled with a strong traditional foundation in reading and other subjects, may obviate the need for an IEP or other special services, depending on what those services may be. As teachers who have been in public education, we believe that "special services" are overrated and ineffective in many cases. We may not be able to provide appropriate services for many students, but believe in many cases that our educational services are just as good or better than the public school's services, for many students.

6. How can you offer free tuition?

We will offer free tuition as long as God provides the funds. We will make tuition as inexpensive as possible because we know that where God guides, He provides. So far He has provided several donors who want to sponsor Christian education for children, although we are still praying for enrollment commitments from the parents of those children.
